Thinner, lighter TVs coming soon

Imagine, if you will, a 37-inch HDTV set that weighs a mere 2.2 pounds. No, it's not April 1. Using something called thick dialectric electroluminescent technology (say that 10 times fast!), this super-light TV is built with thinner glass, fewer electronics, and no backlight.

The technology works uses special blue phosphors with a color conversion materials that absorb the blue light and re-emits red, green and blue light. The result is a super-light screen that's only about an inch thick.

Lest you still think this is just vapour, the manufacturer, iFire, recently spent $25 million expanding their Toronto-based production facility. By simplifying the production process using a process they've named "Color by Blue", they've been able to lower the production costs of the video panels to a mere $300. Don't expect to see TVs in that price range anytime soon though - I'm sure when they hit the market in 2007 they'll be priced competitively with LCD and Plasma displays.
